Shopping, Shopping, Shopping

I took a trip to the Dollarama tonight, I wasn't happy with how I had my coupons organized in a small filing folder, so, I splurged and purchased everything I'd need to set up a binder. For a total of $9.20 I purchased a zipper binder ($2), 4 packages of baseball card holders ($1 each), a package of full sheet pockets ($1) and a package of index dividers ($1). So, for under $10 I now have a fancy smanchy coupon binder!!

After I left Dollarama, I went across the street to Walmart (with competitors flyers in hand in case I needed to price match anything). Here's what I picked up tonight:
3 x Quantim Finish Starter kits (clearance @$6) used 3x $6 off = $0
2 x Schweppes Ginger Ale ($1.50 each) used 2 x $1.00 off = .50 each plus .10 deposit total: $1.20
1x Scrubbing Bubbles Extended Clean ($8.47) used $5.00 off = $3.47
1x Pure Protein bar ($1.67) used the FPC that was in either SmartSource or Red Plum = $0

My grand total for $36.01 (including tax) worth of merchandise ended up being $9.34 for a grand total of 75% savings...not too bad

Rib Rub...Rib Rub...

Say that 3 times fast!! I mixed up some batches of rib rub yesterday, a sweet rub (on the left) and a spicy rub (on the right). I located recipes on www.meat-smoking.com....and I altered them slightly...
Currently, there are two racks of side ribs in the fridge with one rubbed in the spicy and another rubbed in the sweet - will be interesting to see how they turn out! If this damn rain would go away so I don't get soaked BBQing them!

Recipes:

Sweet Dry Rub for Ribs

6 tablespoons brown sugar
3 tablespoons paprika
3 tablespoons salt
3 tablespoons ground black pepper
2 teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoon mustard powder

I pretty much followed this recipe to a T - doubled the batch so I had additional rub on hand for the next time. I did use a mix of 'regular' paprika and smoked paprika in this one.

Spicy Dry Rub for Ribs

6 tablespoons paprika
3 tablespoons salt
3 teaspoons ground black pepper
2 teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons Onion Powder
1 teaspoon Cayenne pepper
use Habanero peppers or for more flavour Chipotle peppers (dried & smoked jalapeno peppers) to add real heat

I didn't have cayenne pepper, and thought I had picked up some chipotle powder, but, it must have fallen through the rails of the shopping cart, so I used chili powder (just a touch) in its place.

Will be interesting to see how they turn out - nothing like making your family guinea pigs!!

Another pretty quiet mail week

Here's the mail haul this week:
- free hair color coupon
- free nestle coupon
- free cottonelle wipes coupon
- 2 websaver envelopes (including a $3.00 off Purex coupon)
- 3 crystal light samples with 75 cent off coupon

I did use my Cottonelle wipe coupon (only pays up to $3.49). Went to our local drug store where I have a discount card. The shelf price was $4.49, with my discount, dropped the price down to $2.95 (plus .44 tax). total came to $3.39 - and the coupon was applied to the total after tax, so I didn't pay a cent!!!

Hope there is more excitement next week!

Is Man V Food is a bad influence?

We love watching Man V Food (we only get re-runs here in Canada). Last night was the episode that featured the Sonora Dog. What's a Sonora Dog you ask? It is a bacon (yes, bacon) wrapped hot dog, and for toppings: chopped tomato, onion, shredded cheese, red chili sauce, beans, mayo, ketchup, mustard and chopped jalapenos. I did these on the BBQ and secured the bacon with toothpicks (and they are double wrapped!! 2 slices per dog).

But, this is interesting. Here is the cover of a recipe booklet from Canada Packers (est. 1927). Canada Packers was a meat
packing and processing and is now part of Maple Leaf foods (1991). Notice anything interesting here...the Canadian version of the Sonora Dog!! In the booklet, they were referred to as Deluxe Dogs - and man 'o man, they are deluxe!! I highly recommend these delights if you are having one of those "don't give a crap about my cholesterol" days.

These are so easy to make. You literally wrap the hot dog (fresh out of the package) with a full slice of bacon. I wrap on the diagonal so that the bacon looks like a spiral (just like on the cover). You can fry them in a pan on the stove, or on the bbq. I prefer mine with cheese, ketchup and mayo.

Just like the old Alka-Selzer commercial: "Try it, you'll like it"
